Amazon in India - large retailers, large manufacturers - Is that the future in India? What about jobs

Amazon is the largest retailer in India - quite an achievement considering the fact that they started  business in India about 6 years back.

India is increasingly inclined towards digitisation given an increasing number of internet users.

In 2016 retail e-commerce in India was $16.07 billion and is expected to increase to $542.3 billion by 2022.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), which represents 70 million traders, has levelled serious allegations against e-commerce players - starting from fraudulent business
practices by manipulating inventory, bypassing the FDI policy to offering predatory pricing.

It has further launched a country wide agitation that includes more than 40,000 trade associations, including the All India Module Retailers Association.

No wonder because 87% of mobile smartphone sales in India are Online

LARGE RETAIL

Avenue Supermarkets runs the retail chain D-Mart.

It started business in 2012.

Since then its sales have grown 10 times and profits have grown 15 times.

The chain retails "value for money" goods which suit the middle and lower middle class in India - a growing and a very large market. It has almost all its stores are owned by itself and its has very little debt in its books - a case of prudent business practice.

So is this the new format in India -  Large Manufacturers and Large Retailers (both helping each other to grow).... seems to be.

All the large retailers - online and offine - Amazon, Flipkart, D-Mart etc. have created lots of jobs - delivery people, workers in departmental stores, better backend logistics employing a lot of people.

While they have generated employment - they have also rendered many small retailers jobless and suffering; a change which is difficult to arrest.

If you go by value to the consumer - is in favour of large retailers.

Large changes are always painful and difficult to manage....
