One of my favourite quotes attributed to Bill Gates is " People overestimate what will happen in a year and underestimate what will happen in a decade"
In my previous blogs I have highlighted wealth which some shares have created over 5-10-20 years. Some of these are
a) HDFC Bank share grew by 235 times since IPO to October 2018. Subsequently it has grown even further. (Read Here)
b) Kotak Bank great 140 times since 2002 to 2018. Subsequently it has grown even further. (Read Here)
c) Asian Paints has grown by 67 times in the 17 years upto May 2019. Subsequently it has grown even further. (Read Here)
Similarly there are many stock which are wealth creators over 5-10 years. They are also called as "Constant Compounders". This trend continues in a growing economy like India.
Tech - Startups
The decade of 2010 has seen an impressive 25x growth from a tiny $550 million in 2010 to $14.5 billion in 2019 in terms of the total funding raised by Startups.
The number of international investors in Tech Startups have also increased substantially. Consumer Tech and Fin Tech being favourites this year (top 2).
2020 - decadal trends
1) Climate Crisis - Focus on alternative energy intensifies -world over. Investments in infrastructure to protect areas effected by global warming. These changes could be extremely severe.
2) Automation - will continue to decrease costs of providing many service systems - that we rely on to make a living. As jobs adjust to these changes, the idea of Capitalism comes under scrutiny, in its ability, to reallocate wealth more equitably.
3) Decentralised Internet - emerges led by decentralised infrastructure services like storage, bandwidth, computing etc.
4) Space - exploration gets dominated by private companies as governments-especially in the developed world-step back.
5) Mass surveillance - by Govts. and corporations becomes a new normal as apps and technologies get developed to maintain individual privacy.
6) Cryptocurrency - gets more understood with some countries introducing their own versions and trying to create a system less dependent on the dollar - the reserve currency of the world. Central banks role changes, to manage such disruptions.
7) Genetics - changes the way terminal illness is treated and understood. Fertility and reproduction will be profoundly changed creating moral and ethical issues in societies.
8) Management - of large corporations and governments will be driven by Millenials and Gen Z by the end of the decade. Age and experience will be less valued by shareholders, voters and other stakeholders.
9) Plant - based diets will dominate by the end of the decade. Food production moves from farms to laboratories of farms managed like laboratories. Non - vegetarian diet becomes a delicacy.
10) Multipolar - world emerges as China becomes the largest economy in the world and competes actively with the west in Innovation. This leads to trade blocks, countries engaging with each other - sometimes simultaneously on solving old conflicts and developing trade. US power recedes and it becomes more inward looking.
